Making Government Hiring Manageable

The Partnership for Public Service runs Go Government, a resource hub for college students, entry-level jobseekers, and university career counselors that demystifies federal hiring and encourages young people to consider careers in government. To make informed choices about information architecture, I ran card sorting activities with college students to learn about what terminology and page organization would be most intuitive to our main audience. Go Government also receives tens of thousands of pageviews from organic searches related to government jobs (for example, “how do government background checks work?”), so I created quick links on the site’s homepage to the most popular pages.

Bringing Internship Opportunities to Students

During my redesign of GoGovernment, I interviewed university employees to learn about the common needs of students. I learned that students are commonly looking for internships opportunities, not full-time jobs, and I heard skepticism that Go Government offers anything not already accessible on existing government websites. In response, I worked with the project team to design features that would address students’ needs using resources only our organization could provide. These included application portals for fellowship programs run by the Partnership and a first-of-its-kind federal internship finder, a tool for helping young people quickly find and apply for internships in government. I also worked with the USAJOBs API documentation to design cards that fetch information about open jobs based on career type (for instance, data science, education, or mathematics).
